I am ISO a Whitmans Sampler Tin in lavender. I know this is HTF, but I am hoping someone has one that they don't want or is able to find one for me. They are metal tins that came out this spring in four different colours. I am looking for the lavender/purple one. I am happy to pay for it (empty or full!) and for postage to me in Canada. Can anyone help?

Ann, www.123stitch has some, not sure of how "earlier" they are. Do you have some pattern names? It's a great shop that I've ordered from before. Another site has some http://www.selmasyarns.com but have never ordered from them before. Of course, some on ebay also, just type the name in the Search box.

I just switched using a Q-snap frame to a new Stitch n' scroll split dowel rachet frame. My problem is I can't seem to get the fabric rolled taunt on the whole frame. It seems that it is taunt on the edges and very loose in the center where most of the stitching is. I can't seem to get it rolled tight enough before I get it in the rachet frame. Anyone else having problems or solutions with this?

Jane, I just found out last week that WalMart no longer carries needlework supplies, including DMC floss. I moved from a city to the country a year ago and I have to travel an hour to get to a Michael's! No Ben Franklin within 2-3 hours! I am glad to have found some websites to explore although I too would like to patron my local stores to support the art. Just wanted you to know that I feel the pain!

I am looking for a cross-stitch pattern of a bride and groom in a wedding sampler-like syle. I believe it was published by Leisure Arts. I stitched it for my wedding in 1983. It was a single pattern (not a book). The cover model was stitched on off-white linen. The bride and groom were standing side by side facing frontward (like towards an audience). The figures have eyes but no other facial features. It may have contained other items such as a ring bearer's pillow, but I don't recall that. The booklet was similar in appearance to the Leisure Arts "Little Ballerina" publication. Thank you!

Yes, I got to visit the Cross Stitch Cupboard in Ft. Lauderdale. They had what I needed although they had to order some of the items and they came in just about when I was ready to return home. They were very well stocked in fabric and were very helpful. This store also caters to some of the other crafts as well.It is not uniquely for needlework. Jeannette

 Hi my name is Gwen,
I am looking for leaflets or patterns for Counted CrossStitch that are called
"House Mouse" and "Baby Hugs". I have found the kits but prefer to do the work by the chart only. I have a diffcult time separating the colors that look some mush alkie and alot of the charts do not give the numbers to the threads.
Also I would like to know how hard it is to cross stitch on an Afghan and also I would like to do some linen but do not have a clue how to even start.
If anyone can help would greatly appreciate it.

you can go to www.salt-and-pepper.com/glossaryofterms and they will give you a the term of it but when you look at the square you have the four holes what you do is come up at one of the hole that you see then you go through the middle of the square where there is no hole when i have something like that when i go down the middle i divide the string so that it is on both sides i hope this works for you.

Connie-re: the backs of bookmarks-check your local craft store for adhesive backed felt-similar to what is used to put on the bottoms of items that set on nice furniture-I have found this at Micheal's-I use this on the backs of Christmas ornaments that I stitch and it can be easily cut to back any item before removing the paper backing that exposes the adhesive-until I saw your question it never occured to me to use it to back bookmarks but I bet it would work just fine on them too.

In the premier issue of Cross Quick magazine (Aug./Sept. 1988) there are three patterns to be put on tin recipe holders. I would love to do these patterns but don't know where to look for the recipe holders. They are about 3-1/2" x 4" and heart shaped. Also, in the Cross Quick (Apr./May '89) issue is a night light, about the same size. Does anyone know if these items are even available anymore? Thanks! Anne

good point, janie, and one of best parts of the internet is how it connects folks with like interests. i also read the MB at 1-2-3.com and there's a current thread about 'where do you live'. the response shows an amazing global community of stitchers. the sense of fewer stitchers may come from the shrinking brick and mortar retail market for stitching supplies. so much shelf space now is quilting and knitting even at michael's and joann's which are my main suppliers now that walmart bowed out of stitchy bits. Emma, I could not find a conversion chart for you, but the entire kit is available for $20.00 at http://www.xstitchwithme.com/needletreasureschristmas.htm. When you consider the cost of buying the large piece of fabric, felt backing, threads, etc. it may be that the purchase of a new kit would actually be cheaper for you.

Cross stitching has been an addiction for me for over 20 years. My daughter was ready to learn at age 4 she was begging me to teach her. Not only has she learned how to cross stitch, but knit and weave as well. She has made several gifts for family and friends the last couple of years. She is now 11. I have also shared my love of cross stitching with my girl scout troop. I agree that we need to do everything we can to keep the love of needlework alive.

I agree. Xstitch with good ole' DMC and Aida has decreased popularity. One of things we can do is be a "Mentor". DMC has a mentor program, and sends you a nice pin and upon request some basic free mini-kits in order to teach someone (or a group) to XS. I did this for a group of 7th graders and they loved it. Offer it to a friend at work, a troop of Girl Scouts, etc. Go to http://www.dmc-usa.com/ and sign up to be a Mentor! Keep the craft going!

Delivery by Needle Treasures. I made the stocking and gave it as a gift, I still have the chart and would like to make another one, the problem is the kit doesn't state what brand of floss was used. Can anyone help me out The trade mark on the kit is Red Farm Studio. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Emma

For the longest time, nobody was knitting (I was!) Then the scarf craze got people knitting again, and I think it's becoming popular again. A problem is, our society has become so "busy" that there isn't time to devote to needlecrafts...those of us who have kept them up need to keep doing them. And certainly, we need to teach them to our children and anyone else who shows an interest.

Jane, I agree that the stitching people are less and less. I read a lot of stitching boards though(one of my favorites is 123stitch.com). Luckily I live in the DC metro area and have three stitching stores near me(and a Joanns to buy threads). I think we have to teach younger people to stitch. My sons GF stitches. I order online sometimes but try to support my LNSs so they will stay in business. I have been to several stitching get togethers(one of them at Sue Hillis's). I have been stitching since 1975, and usually stitch everyday.

Is it my imagination, or has cross stitching fallen out of favor as a needleart? I have been doing this craft for more than 30 years (yikes!) and I have never seen such a lack of interest (on message boards for example), disappearing LNS's, low prices on charts and places like Walmart eliminating the craft all together from its shelves. This is disconcerting! I've been an addict too long to go cold turkey now! :) What do others think?

Diane, It took me a while to figure this out also! Stitching on linen is just as easy as stitching on Aida cloth, except you'll be stitching over 2 threads of the linen. Think of it as over 2 squares of Aida. They call it "threads" because linen is so fine and has uneven "squares".

Diane, The main thing you have to remember is to bring the needle up in the hole that has the warp (vertical) thread at the bottom of the "square". The thread should be on the right of the needle if you are working stitches from left to right.

If you are going to frame that project, you can sew extra fabric on each side to give you more room to frame your project with a mat to hide the fabric.

You can look on ebay to get an idea what the going rate for finished cross stitch is - they have a category under crafts/cross stitch titled Completed Cross stitch. Hope this helps.

Has anyone charged for a cross-stitch prject? A friend is willing to pay me for it but I do not know what to charge for my time. It is 5x7 solid stitches on 14 count. It took me 38 hours to complete.

Estelle, Actually, when the stitch count changed it made the piece bigger. The fabric, of course did not change and it will fit with bearly an inch left for framing. After this, I too will be avoiding kits, especially from this designer. It's left a really bad taste in my mouth. I really thought this company had a better reputation they have displayed in this matter. Thanks-Shiela

SHIELA: If the stitch count was changed it might fit on the piece of fabric you have. Did you check it out. This is one of the reasons why I don't buy kits.

As with most stitchers, my stash tote/box is full and running over. (I'm saving for retirement.) Recently, I pulled out a rather old kit (from 2003) and found that not only was the stitch count incorrect but that the fabric was cut to that stitch count (and believe me, it was not in my favor). I wrote to the company (my LNS where I bought it is out of business) and was told that they published a correction to the stitch count back in 2003 on their website. Now that doesn't correct the size of the fabric they provided but that was their answer. They would send me another piece of fabric but it would be the same size as previously provided. What kind of resolution is that? Has anyone else had a similar problem before? Thanks

So I was stitching just now and it occurred to me that the crossings were facing awkwardly. How do people deal with this? I tried shaking it, but this just seemed to make things worse. My son keeps screaming at me to give up (even threw a plate at me), but I'm a stubborn old guy.
Oh, and sorry if my terminology is hard to understand, I tend to make up my own words for things. It should be pretty obvious what I'm referring to, though. I probably won't find my way back to the message board, so please email me at stephanieebond@gmail.com if you can offer any help.

Tamara -- stitching on 28 count over two threads will result in exactly the same finished size as stitching on 14 count over one. If you use two strands when you stitch on 14 count, you can use two strands on 28 count also. I prefer three strands though. In my opinion, it covers better.

I need some help calculating. I have used the calculator on this site but I am a bit confused. I have a pattern that calls for 14 count Aida. I however would like to use 28 count Joblean since the "holes" won't be as visible. The finished size of the pillow is 14 x 14. What do I have to do in order maintain the same size with the higher count fabric? Do I need to stitch over more threads and use 3 or 4 threads? If any one can help me figure it out, let me know.
Thanks,
Tamara
