Harriett Salt 1866

$36.00

Cross stitch pattern from Hands Across the Sea Samplers. A reproduction of a red thread "Bristol orphan sampler" stitched by Harriet Salt, who is likely also the creator of a multicolored sampler that surfaced in auction in 2015. All of the girls who lived in George Mueller's orphanage between the ages of 12 and 15 were required to stitch a red thread sampler, which makes these pieces interesting in the history of needlework and in social norms. The sampler includes fourteen alphabets and more than 50 border examples. Text reads "Harriet Salt, North Wing, New Orphan House, Ashley Down, Bristol, 1866." Stitch count 413w x 414h.
